School Music

Zion has a long tradition of providing an outstanding music program for its students. Many opportunities are offered in order to assist children in their musical progression throughout the years in Zion’s elementary and middle school departments. Each student in Kindergarten through second grade is taught in a general music class by his or her teacher. Dr. Sam Eatherton and Lois Eatherton teach the music classes for grades 3 through 8.

The musical activities of the School are closely aligned with the life of Zion Lutheran Church.  For more information on the overall music program of the Church, click here.

School Choirs

In addition to the general music class, every student in Kindergarten through grade 8 participates in a choir that sings from time to time throughout the school year for Sunday morning worship and occasional evening hymn festivals and concerts. The choirs of the school are the Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade Choir; the 3rd and 4th Grade Choir; the 5th and 6th Grade Choir; and the 7th and 8th Grade Choir.

As students advance to each new choir level, they become better music readers, and their performance schedule becomes more active. Beginning in the 3rd and 4th grades, students learn to sing in two and three parts, with these skills improved and built upon in the 5th and 6th, and 7th and 8th grades. The older choirs not only sing in the church but also perform from time to time in the community as well, at nursing homes, hospitals, and malls. In this way, the Christian message is spread through music.

Beginning in Grade 3, all students are instructed in music reading by learning to play the recorder. Students continue their classroom recorder study through the 4th grade. After 4th grade, advanced students have the opportunity to play as soloists or in ensembles for chapel and other worship and concert occasions.

In 5th grade, students are eligible to begin study of a band instrument with Mr. Abbott, our band instructor. 5th grade band class is held twice a week during the school day, and 6th-8th grade band occurs after school twice a week.

There is no additional band fee for parents (except for the cost of an instrument.) Instruments can be rented on a monthly basis from a company such as Williamson Music in Plano. In addition, Zion owns several band instruments that are available to students at a nominal cost.  Please contact Mr. Gil Abbott with any questions you may have.

Handbell Choir

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students of the school are given the opportunity to play in one of the two student handbell choirs, which rehearse after school.  The student handbell choirs play when the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choirs sing for worship and concerts.

Students are able to participate in other music opportunities at Zion, including:
